Going GREEN at Worksman Cycles

Editorial by Wayne Sosin, President of Worksman Cycles

"Tree Hugger" Article - 3/10/08

For over a century, Worksman Cycles has been promoting and manufacturing the most efficient "green" products of all: human powered cycles. We certainly did not invent the bicycle, but we pioneered the efforts to utilize bicycles and tricycles for work related transportation. Worksman Cycles are used by companies in place of gas powered or battery powered vehicles, which naturally saves energy and reduces emissions.

In 2008 when our bicycle factory was located in Ozone Park NY Worksman Cycles took step towards environmental responsibility. The Worksman Cycle factorywas located in a section of New York City called Ozone Park. It occupies an entire city block and measures close to 100,000 square feet. The Company completed construction of a 72 Solar Panel 15KW energy delivery system on the roof of the warehouse that generates nearly 25% of the electrical requirements to run the factory. Worksman Cycles was one of the first New York City Manufacturers to "go Solar"! Every day that the sun shines on our panels, we produce electricity, thus, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and lowering our carbon footprint.

In addition to the solar energy system, we have reduced the electric demand by replacing every light fixture in the facility with high efficiency T5 and T8 lighting.

This was all part of a plan to create a more environmentally friendly company. In addition to the steps outlined above, we are managing our recycling efforts more closely including the recycling of corrugate by using a new shredder (converting former waste into packaging material). We recently completed the resurfacing of our entire roof for better insulation and to reflect in an effort to better to fight global warming.

In Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth", one of the simple recommendations at the movie's conclusion is "Ride a Bike". Naturally we've known this for a long time, but we felt compelled to be part of the solution in more ways than one. Worksman Cycles and our customers can all be part of the solution. We must be.
